Lou Gramm sat down with Kyle Meredith to talk about a moment in his career that manages to be both full-circle and brand new. As Foreigner celebrate their 50th anniversary — and deluxe edition for 4 — Gramm is stepping back onstage with the band for a handful of dates (including tonight and tomorrow at The Capitol Theater in in Port Chester, NY — get tickets to all Journey’s shows here!), all while prepping his first solo album in ages. He and Meredith unpack the rush of rediscovering unfinished tracks from the 4 era, the thrill of completing them decades later, and why this chapter feels like a victory lap with something still left to prove. Once he dove into the old reels, Gramm says the forgotten tracks from 4 immediately lit a spark: “When I found out they were going to be finished and included in this package, it was a real pleasure to put the 24-track on and hear the sounds as they were back in that day.” He even had to match his 1981 vocal grit: “We ended up matching the vocal sounds to a tee,” he laughs, marveling at the time-travel challenge. And as for choosing what to sing when rejoining Foreigner: “They let me pick first. I just pick some of my favorites that I like singing.”
Gramm also opens up about the long road to sobriety and how it reshaped his life and work. “I made the conscious decision that that’s not what I wanted anymore for my life,” he says of leaving behind the backstage chaos, adding with pride, “I’ve been about 34 years sober now.” That discipline feeds into his new solo album, arriving in March, which mixes new material with songs he finally finished after decades on the shelf. “It rocks hard, boy,” he promises. “Some new songs, some older songs that deserved to be on the album… it’s a little conglomerate of past and present.”
